CVC Word Families No Prep Spin and Spell Word Work Game

$5.12

Give your K-2 students no-prep practice building CVC words with these hands-on Spin and Spell word work mats.

Students spin a picture, build the matching CVC word, write it, create a rhyming word, then substitute one sound to make a brand-new word — strengthening phonemic awareness, encoding, rhyming, and phoneme manipulation skills along the way.

This low-prep literacy center provides meaningful practice with short vowel word families while encouraging students to listen for sounds, manipulate phonemes, and apply their growing phonics knowledge.

Perfect for literacy centers, small groups, intervention, morning work, independent practice, and Science of Reading aligned classrooms.

Use our Word Work Mats to build phonological awareness skills:

    • spelling CVC word families – use visual cues to spell different CVC words
    • writing CVC words – build fine motor skills by handwriting the CVC word
    • producing rhyme – make a word that rhymes with the CVC word pictured
    • manipulating sounds – creating a new CVC word by changing the initial, medial, or final sound of the original word

To prepare the Spin and Spell word work game:

    • Print the pages you'd like your students to practice. There are 8 different mats for each vowel sound. A mix of word families are included in each mat for each medial vowel sound.
    • Slide into a page protector or laminate the mats to allow students to build and write on the sheet repeatedly with a dry erase marker.

    To use, students will:

    1. Use a pencil and paper clip to create a spinner.
    2. Spin the paper clip to find a CVC word to work with.
    3. Build the CVC word to match the picture using magnetic letters, playdough, or similar.
    4. With a dry erase marker, write the word in the space provided.
    5. Think of a word that rhymes with the CVC word pictured. Write or build it in the space provided.
    6. Change one sound in the CVC word pictured to create a new word. Write or build it in the space provided.

The mats in this unit are best suited for use with students in Kindergarten (Prep), but they can also be used in Preschool for those children who are ready for a challenge, or at the beginning of Grade 1 for revision purposes.

These mats are designed for independent use, but you may want to go over the picture names before having students complete the page independently. You can also double-side print these mats so the CVC picture names appear as a reference page on the back of each mat.

Instructions for use as well as a teacher reference have also been included.
